WEST ISLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH STRATEGIC PLANNING FOCUS GROUP REPORT

The Strategic Planning Team has been trying to summarize what we learned from our Focus Group exercise. It has been so interesting, and a little overwhelming. What we can all see are people who love this church very much. People took the time to attend the meetings and share their thoughts. It was surprising how engaged our members were once they started talking and sharing ideas. And looking at the forms that were filled out, it is evident that people took a lot of time and care to fill them out, even prioritizing our strengths and weaknesses, and sharing many ideas that our team had not mentioned.

1. PARTICIPATION

We had at least 32 people who participated in some way, a good representation of the congregation.

2. WHAT WE HEARD

We believe that the church was honored in that so many people thoughtfully participated in the meetings and/or filled out forms. Now how should we process the results? There were so many ideas and thoughtful suggestions offered verbally at the 3 meetings. It seems that some of those wonderful ideas were not written down on one of our forms, so while we can’t just tally the results of our forms and move forward, we can prayerfully filter and process what we heard with the written results.

Our members do have some definite ideas of what we should and should not do. Lighted vs. not lighted signs would be a lively conversation. Bingo drew a few very negative comments. (“NO!”)

3. SUMMARY OF RESULTS

There were 4 categories of ideas.

ADVERTISING: Almost everyone who participated thought we need to let people know we are here. Most people liked all types of advertising that were listed and added many others.

NEW MINISTRIES: There were many, many ideas. The more popular were Pastoral care, training events/classes, Yoga/Zumba Classes, Singles, Christian Book Club and Home Groups. Several people talked about going to nursing homes and hospitals. One comment on the van for elderly pickup was that our church has tried that before so there is a history.

EVENT IDEAS: The most popular idea is having a Concert series (with Angelo, others, and gospel groups). Many people mentioned Dinner on the Ground, Ice Cream Socials or Family Nights (with sing-alongs) at the church. Sunrise Easter service was mentioned by several people and lots of other ideas were listed.

DEVELOPING MATURE DISCIPLES: The most popular on the forms is Bible Studies. The runner ups are similar: reading the Bible as a group, and Sunday school for adults. There was some interest in a congregation-wide survey.

4. SPECIFIC IDEAS FROM THE MEETINGS AND FORMS

The results are a compilation of verbal responses recorded on the big note pad from the 3 group meetings, the on-line forms, and forms handed in. When you read all the great ideas that our congregation came up with, you will see that we need a good process to "make things happen." We cannot do everything at once, but can work together on those items/events that we believe are the most important to our church in fullfilling God's mission for us. Results of focus groups.

The Strategic Planning Team really appreciates all the help and support we got from the congregation. We hope that God will let us all know how we can best contribute to fulfilling the mission statement of "Making Disciples for Christ" a reality in every possible way at West Isle.
